1. REPORT ON IWCS-4
The 4th International Workshop in Computational Semantics (IWCS-4),
hosted by the Computational Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence
Group at Tilburg University, was held in Tilburg, the Netherlands,
from 10-12 January 2001.
The IWCS is the leading workshop in computational semantics; indeed,
for several years it was the only workshop solely devoted to the
topic. The IWCS-4 program, consisting of 3 invited talks (by James
Allen, Jan van Eijck and Alex Lascarides), 22 submitted talks, and a
number of shorter presentations, continued the tradition in fine form
and was much enjoyed by participants.
You can find a report on IWCS-4, written by Kristina Striegnitz, on
the SIGSEM webpage at http://www.sigsem.org.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. REPORT ON SIGSEM BUSINESS MEETING
A SIGSEM business meeting was held during IWCS-4 in Tilburg, from
16.45 - 17.45, on 11 January 2001.
The meeting was well attended (most of the IWCS-4 participant seem to
have gone along) and a number of interesting ideas were raised
concerning both general themes (such as possible future directions for
SIGSEM) and specific issues (such as possible changes to the website).
You can find a report on the SIGSEM business meeting, written by Ivana
Kruijff-Korbayova, on the SIGSEM webpage (http://www.sigsem.org).

3. EACL SPONSORS COMPUTATIONAL SEMANTICS COURSE
The EACL (Association for Computational Linguistics, European Chapter)
has sponsored a foundational course in computational semantics which
will be offered at ESSLLI-XIII, the European Summer School in Logic,
Language and Information, 13-24 August 2001 in Helsinki, Finland,
namely:
An Introduction to Computational Semantics
Patrick Blackburn and Johan Bos
The EACL will be covering travel and accommodation costs for one of
the two lecturers.
The Helsinki ESSLLI offers a number of courses and workshops which are
likely to be of interest to SIGSEM members. For more information, see
http://www.helsinki.fi/esslli/
For more information about the EACL and its activities, see
http://www.eacl.org.mt/

4. CHANGES TO SIGSEM WEBSITE
There have been a number of changes to the SIGSEM website.
First, note that there is a new clickable, called Archive, on the main
webpage. This points to a repository of information about SIGSEM and
associated activities. At present you will find there business meeting
and conference reports, the annual reports that SIGSEM makes to the
ACL (Association for Computational Linguistics), and the newsletter
archive.
Second, note that under Resources, there is now a pointer to the
permanent Inference in Computational Semantics (ICoS) site. This
contains some general information about ICoS and the papers from
previous ICoS workshops.
Also, note that under Resources there is now a pointer to
semanticsarchive.net
This site is dedicated to exchanging papers of interests to natural
language semanticists. Although linguistically rather than
computationally oriented, the site is likely to be of interest to
SIGSEM members, and certainly seems an initiative worth supporting.

5. ICOS-3
The Third Inference in Computational Semantics Workshop (ICoS-3) will
be held as a satellite event of IJCAR 2001, the International Joint
Conference on Automated Reasoning, which takes place from 18-23 June
2001, in Siena, Italy. ICoS-3 will be a two day event taking place on
18-19 June. IJCAR is a one-time-only event made up by bringing
together three of the main automated reasoning conferences: CADE, FTP,
and TABLEAUX. Thus ICoS-3 offers a unique opportunity to meet a
substantial part of the automated reasoning community.
The ICoS-3 program consists of: three invited talks (by David Israel,
Alexander Koller, and Ian Pratt-Hartmann), two short tutorials
(Automated Reasoning for Computational Semanticists, by Ulrich
Furbach, and Computational Semantics for Automated Reasoners, by
Claire Gardent), plus seven submitted papers and four system
descriptions (a list of these papers can be found on the ICoS-3
homepage at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~kohlhase/event/icos3/). Full
details of the program will be appearing there shortly; they may well
be there by the time you receive this newsletter.
Note that early registration for ICoS-3 closes on May 15. You can
access the registration forms from the ICoS-3 homepage. Also note
that registered participants of IJCAR can register for ICoS-3 for an
additional cost of only 65 Euros.

6. WANTED: REPORT(S) ON ICOS-3
We would like the SIGSEM webpage to carry a report (or reports) on
ICoS-3. The report(s) will initially be made available from the main
SIGSEM page, and then from the Archive.
If you are attending ICoS-3, and would like to write such a report
(see the reports on IWCS-4 and the SIGSEM business meeting for
examples of the kind of thing we have in mind) please contact Patrick
Blackburn (patrick@aplog.org).

7. NEXT NEWSLETTER
The next SIGSEM newsletter will be emailed in 4 months time (that is,
late August/early September 2001).
The SIGSEM newsletter is sent only to SIGSEM members, and by default
it is sent to all members. If you don't want to receive it again,
please send an email saying so to:
info@sigsem.org
We anticipate sending out the newsletter 3 times a year, at 4 month
intervals.
